The tinniest little red bat pup is our youngest baby bat. It’s still baby season despite most of our pups being older there is still time for tiny foliage bats like this sweet boy to come into care ❤️ Red bats breed in August and September. Fertilization does not occur until spring. The gestation period is 80-90 days, after which the female produces a litter of 1-5 (average 2 or 3) young, the largest litter size of any bat. Female eastern red bats give birth in late June or July. Pups remain at

This little guy loves munching on a meal worm! Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) are North America's most abundant “tree bats.” They are found wherever there are trees east of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to as far south as central Florida. Eastern red bats roost right out in the foliage of deciduous or sometimes evergreen trees. Despite their bright red color, these bats are actually rather cryptic, looking like dead leaves or pine cones. They are perfectly camouflaged as they hang curled

What a strange season it has been with very few Little Red flying-foxes coming into care. Reds are nomadic and they generally arrive in large numbers during the summer months but this year we are host to a very small number of Reds. Recently rescued by Louella, Master Rabbit was caught by his leg on a barbed wire fence but fortunately, his injuries are minor. Now in care and feasting on fresh mangoes, Rabbit will stay with us whilst he heals before being released back to the wild to continue his

The Eastern red bat is a small bat with distinctive red fur. They can weigh from ¼ to ½ ounce and are usually less than 4” in length. They eat insects, and prefer moths, including several pest species. Eastern red bats are widely distributed through the central and eastern parts of the US and are thought to be one of the most abundant bats in their range. These bats are not as obvious in our landscape because they typically live alone or in small family groups, unlike some of the other bat speci

Our first eastern red bat pup of the season is ready to fly free for the very first time ❤️ we will miss him dearly but this is why we work so hard raising these precious babies. Our sweet Saffron arrived at just 4 days old suffering from a fractured radius. Thankfully volunteer Ryan transported this sweet boy in the middle of the night. Saffron made a full recovery and flying beautiful, choosing natural foliage to snooze and hunting insects ❤️ Thank you for supporting our efforts and helping us

Positive News Story! Remember the silver haired bat (yes, the one with fur that sparkles like tinsel) that was admitted in February after waking up from hibernation due to mild temperatures? After 79 days in care, he was released back to his home on Tuesday! Silver-haired bats are known as “tree bats” and need deciduous and coniferous forests with trees at varying ages including older growth for their habitat. They are considered a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Maine, and deforestatio

Our adult Eastern Red Bat. She came to use with a broken right shoulder which makes it hard for her to fed herself, so I help her. She’s on pain meds and limited activity until she goes to see the vet. She’s eating and drinking great as you can see. She will be a permanent critter here at our facility becoming a USDA educational ambassador! I have named her Finn after the wonderful person that found her hurt and needing help and getting her to us. 🫶🏼. We are in desperate need of mealworms I ha

Finn, our USDA educational ambassador, is an Eastern Red Bat 🦇 She has a shoulder injury that prevents her from flying so she’ll stay here with us educating the public about bats so people will learn the facts and myths about them. She will have her first education program on October 21st in Covington Ky Public Library where we will be doing a presentation all about bats of Kentucky! She absolutely loves me to pet her. It puts her to sleep as you can see in this video. Even though it’s cute to

This Eastern Red Bat 🦇 came into our care because rescuer noticed it laying in their driveway. She boxed it up and called us. Upon inspection we think maybe what happened is it came out of hibernation to early and got cold, couldn’t fly and then got attacked by a cat. Wounds on its belly, wing and head. We have her on antibiotics and a little pain meds. She is doing better than expected and is getting more friendly as she sees I’m here to help and not hurt her. If anyone would like to help with

This is an Eastern Red Bat, female. Her name is Hope. She is super tame with me, as she knows me and im her caretaker PSA. Bats native to North America are all ‘Microbats’ they are small and insectivores. All large bats that are located over other parts of the world are known as “Megabats”. Microbats are the ones that use echolocation , Megabats dont (with a couple of exceptions). All bats roost hanging 🙃 upsidedown. Why? Because bats have to “drop” to be able to fly, as they cannot jump up lik
